Steam & Excursion > The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2Date: 04/13/14 17:48 The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: TheNavigator Thank you everyone for the kind comments on yesterday's post.
As in years past, 3751 started the day making a reverse movement by shoving its train westward and then pulling forward around the wye west of the San Bernardino depot and then backing into the display track. The gloomy weather put a damper on things but even so, being able to shoot big mainline steam operating in the 21st century was something that is becoming all too rare anymore. Fortunately the overcast did its usual mid-day disappearing act and we had sunny skies for one last shot as 3751 returned home to LA. Thanks for looking, GK 1. Shortly after 7:00 AM, 3751 starts its reverse move westward as the few of us on the platform soaked it all in. 2. 3751 has traversed the west leg of the wye and is now backing up on the east leg toward the depot. Picture taken from the Rialto Ave. overpass. 3. Just as 3751 came to a stop in the display area, this westbound doublestack came down from Cajon toward LA. One more to follow. Excellent, all I can say. Maryland's loss is California's gain. Welcome home. Chuck aka blackwidowgp9 Date: 04/13/14 18:06 Re: The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: wcamp1472 Is that the only place to carry the wheel-chocks/Skates?

I realize that 3751 is the star of the weekend, but I couldn't help but notice in the background of the second photo a diesel still lettered for Santa Fe in warbonnet paint with the red color still looking decent. As for Maryland's loss...I think California is just reclaiming a "favorite son" rail photog.

They sure were NOT on the front end going over to San Bernardino! Date: 04/13/14 19:27 Re: The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: Cajon92 Another very nice set, Gary. Thanks for sharing your results.
~Ryan Date: 04/13/14 19:29 Re: The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: flash34 99% sure those ARE skates or chocks, and I seem to remember they were kept in a tender locker or somewhere like that when I went with the crew.

Those are some of the GP60M's that are in local service. About half of them are still sporting warbonnet. From the Power Unit, to the Bi-Level Car then Dome & so on! Good arrangement!

Those *are* chocks. I watched them being removed from the rail this afternoon. The decision to place them in front was unfortunate. Date: 04/14/14 06:25 Re: The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: andersonb109 "Neat looking consist?" Hardly. Not at all prototypical for a steam loco. Please see Masterphots shots posted today of 611 back in the day. That's what a steam train should look like...complete with smoke which seems also to be absent in almost every photo of the 3751's trip. But hey, if you don't care...go for it. Obviously many did and had an enjoyable day.

Date: 04/14/14 09:30 Re: The 3751 Bandwagon, Day 2 Author: flyingfred andersonb109, I know that you were merely addressing the statement by Amtrak562 about the "neat looking consist" which I understand. Please keep in mind that 3751 does not belong to a major railroad. The San Bernardino Railroad Historical Society, of which I have been a member for many years, does not own passenger cars. No, the consist is not prototypical for a steam locomotive, however this is the 21st century and having mainline steam still running in California is a miracle performed by the many people who keep this engine in proper running order. Getting a passenger consist of any sort for these sporadic trips is quite a job. I feel fortunate that the engine is allowed to run on our local commuter rail system at all. Being able to run steam with the AQMD looking over your shoulder is really tough in California these days. The crews really try to keep any smoke to a minimum. Back in steam days a clear stack was the sign of a good fireman. I have been riding mainline steam excursions all around the country for close to 40 years now. Even though this excursion is fairly short as mainline excursions go, I am still happy to have ridden it both days on the rear platform of the Tioga Pass and did not have to venture far from home like usual. We even had a sort of bonus tour of a paper recycling yard at Bassett while we were in the hole for 45 minutes awaiting the Metrolink movements. :)

You can call me any time - TIOGA PASS is always ready for a trip like this. I thoroughly enjoyed this years trip and the past trips. SBRHS is a great group to work with.
