UP 4014, Salt Lake City, 1962
Author: donstrack

I've been scanning a bunch of Dave England's black and white prints, and discovered just last night that among them are some photos of UP 4014 en route to California in January 1962. The photos are taken from the west side of UP's Salt Lake City yard, and the shadows indicate that it is very close to sunset.

Here is a fourth photo, showing the entire locomotive.

Thanks for these historic photos of her presumed to be "last" journey. I hope when 4014 comes back in steam that she will look pretty much like these photos, and not too "dolled up".

I hope...

Yes...she sure does look great! But she looks great because she looks original. You all know what I mean...no signs, flags, bunting or pizza pie plates under the headlight.

Not to worry! I'm told that a pizza pie plate, bunting, signs, flags, and silver paint for the tires and wash out plugs has already been ordered. 4014 will be looking like a dance hall girl in no time.

I look at these old steam engines and always wonder why the tenders were the size they were. ATSF, on their later orders for their big NORTHERN class engines, got BIG tenders. For a BIG BOY, you'd think the tender would be twice that size, given all the water that thing gulped climbing grades.

Tender size was limited by the length of turntables. Tender capacity, as built, was 28 tons of coal and 25,000 gallons water.

What no neon for under the boards?...Good grief I hope they don't cover the 4014 with all that garbage like the 844.
