Apache Railway Number 300
Author: HeislerPower

Neat image of Apache Railway Mikado number 300 taken at Holbrook, Arizona in 1921. Many years later, February 3, 1947, this Baldwin was involved in a fatal accident near Snowflake, Arizona. A faulty tender journal caused a derailment that rolled the locomotive onto the fireman's side, crushing the cab and breaking off steam pipes which resulted in the death of two crew members.

The 90-ton Baldwin Mikado was constructed in August of 1919, builders number 52191 and served the Apache Railway until it was sold to Southwest Lumber in 1954, and finally scrapped in September of 1956.

Enjoy, Taylor

Thanks for posting. I haven't seen many roster shots of Apache steam locomotives.

Interesting in that it burned coal.

Being scalded by steam in a derailment or collision while in the cab of a steam locomotive was too common.

They later converted her over to oil, though I don't know when.
