Coming soon to a NS track near you...Southern 4501
Author: srman

With the restoration of TVRM's Southern 4501 soon to be completed and out and running on the system a new generation of railfans will witness first hand the sights and sounds of this 2-8-2. I'd like to share a few shots of her back in the 90's running on the NS or TVRM sponsored trips. I'd also like to say that this is not to be a green or black issue but rather just a thanks to NS and the volunteers on TVRM in getting her back out on the road for all to enjoy.

I'll bet the guys back in the 1218 in the tripleheader shot enjoyed the cinder shower. We were digging cinders out of corners on 1522 for years after doubleheading with 611 in 1994.

The shots of her in black is an October 1996 trip down the Chattooga & Chickamauga (ex. C of G)from Chattanooga to Trion Ga. and return.

Beautiful photos, but I sell prefer black.

Excellent photos. She looks good in green & black. How about a compromise? Half green and half black? Paint fades from one color to the other. *sarcasm font off*

I take it, she'll stay down South?

I'd wager that this will be the case. 765 tends to rule the northern part of the system. 630 coming to Cincinnati this May will be the furthest north a TVRM engine will have reached since the reinstatement of NS steam. Plus, since she is newly rebuilt, she will more than likely stay close to home for the near future in case problems should arise.

As for paint: how about diagonal green and black stripes? Like a candy cane from the underworld? The front end of the boiler can be a green/black spiral so if you concentrate on it when she is coming at you, you either hallucinate or have a seizure. Sounds like a good time to me.

I got to ride the tool car behind the 261 years ago. I was picking cinders out of my hair for at least a week!

I thought I'd prefer green as it is representing
a passenger train and Southern green is pretty
sweet. Based on the pictures, she looks sweet
and classy in black. Would look good on a photo
freight, too.

Cinders from 611? Cinders come from coal and 611 is oil fired.

WHAT???? Just why do you think that the Norfolk & Western Railway would EVER have an "oil fired" steam locomotive, in the heart of "Coal Country"?

If they want to borrow a certain open air car, I know where it is....

Ed,

It sure would be nice if the Lookout Mountain was back on the end of the NS excursions. I remember riding a majority of a trip from Knoxville to Cumberland Gap on that car. It was one of the few chances for us "commoners" to have an opportunity to ride an open platform.

Didn't NS pull Lookout Mountain from excursion service before the program was discontinued? Was it the Dismal Swamp derailment that was its undoing?

First congrats on image of the day!! Great photos! I can't wait to see her out and running! As far as the green and black paint debate goes I think that compromise, as someone stated, is the best way to go! Paint the engineer's side in green and gold and the fireman's side in black!

Yes, I believe they pulled all the friction-bearing, non-tightlock coupler cars from the train. That's how we ultimately ended up with several former excursion train cars. We have converted them to roller bearings...
