How long have they been doing this? eBay does something similar on both the selling & buying ends.

This has been around for a while.

Keep in mind - the amount, which is no charge to you, is "only" .5% of your purchase.
This translates to roughly $15 bucks if you buy a $3,000 camera. However... if you
multiply that amount by thousands of railfans, families and businesses that sign up
over the span of a year - I'd bet it's a nice chunk of cash. And again, it costs
nothing to the purchaser.

With that in mind... don't forget to make regular donations to your favorite charities.

Tons of worthy charities in there, but a quick search shows the Virginia Museum of Transportation is one of them.

When you log in to smile.amazon.com, at the top you will see in orange "supporting" and the name of the charity you are currently signed up to support. If you click on the "supporting" word, it takes you to a page where you can change your charity or search for other charities.
