Steam & Excursion > Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations?Date: 07/20/14 03:49 Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: Evan_Werkema The Central Coast Railway Club sponsored an excursion from Oakland to the McCloud River Railroad in northern California in July 1955 for a golden spike ceremony opening the Burney extension. Conservatively attired SP steam pulled the train to Mt. Shasta City, where the MCR and their gussied-up 2-6-2 #25 took over. The prairie was adorned with a green boiler jacket, gold smokebox, red front coupler, and tender art worthy of Barney Google. McCloud's pair of comparatively unadorned Baldwin DRS-6-6-1500's also lent their muscle to help pull the train except at photo runbys.
The Western Railway Museum Archives has a set of medium format Anscochrome transparencies of the event with absolutely no labeling as to photographer or locations. The photographer we may never know, but can anyone pin down just where the second and third images below were taken along the MCR? Date: 07/20/14 03:50 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Even with my tolerance for "so what? It's steam!" I have to admit the decorations are a little over the top. --Becky Date: 07/20/14 09:58 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: Topfuel "Two in lower berth @ $58.50 ea."
I guess that's do-able, but me thinks that would be a little tight. Date: 07/20/14 10:03 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: MarkMeoff BAAAARRRRFFFFF!!!!!
The only redeeming photo was of the 2 Baldwin diesels, ya know, if you like diesels. Date: 07/20/14 15:11 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: Keystone1 Becky...the word you are looking for is "tasteless".

> Do you or someone have a consist of the train? Not sure if the club would have written it up in the Ferroequinologist or not - I'll have to do some digging next time I'm up at WRM. Here are a few more scenes showing a photo runby southbound at Lake Britton, as well as a view of the ceremonial "last tie" complete with spikes. The plaque on the redwood tie says "Last Tie Burney Extension, McCloud River Railroad, July 3, 1955, from California's Oldest Operating Railroad, Arcata and Mad River Railroad Co." Does this artifact still exist somewhere? Date: 07/21/14 11:28 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: Leia Probably burn up with the depot fire in McCloud
Date: 07/21/14 12:35 Re: Putting the "loud" in McCloud...locations? Author: LoggerHogger The tie was on display at the top of the stairs in the McCloud River RR depot/offices. Unfortunately it was lost in the fire.
Ev, these are some seriously fabulous photos of that well known trip on the McCloud. I fired the #25 on a number of trips that we took her to Burney on and across this bridge including the Stand By Me filming that took a week in 1985. The view from the cab was really something out on the bridge. Look at the railfans standing on the tender of #25 in the last shot! Martin Edited 1 time(s).
