Planes and Boats and Trains - 1

Took a cruise to Alaska aboard the “old duffers cruise line” aka Holland America. Notable ports and land portions featured two rides on the Alaska Railroad and one on the White Pass and Yukon, the latter behind steam.

We flew from San Jose to Seattle, bussed to Vancouver, Canada and boarded the M.S. Statendam for a journey up the inside passage with stops at Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, a cruise of Glacier Bay and finally Seward. The first three stops offered a chance to photograph a number of float planes, something I don’t see much of here in San Luis Obispo, and rounding out the three transportation elements in the title.

At Skagway we eschewed the Holland America diesel powered train for a 4-hour round trip behind White Pass & Yukon 2-8-2 No. 73. If you care, follow along for the next week or so as we journey through Alaska via train and boat.

1. Princess Lines Island Princess in Juneau Harbor with a deHavilland DHC-3 taxiing out.

2. GE diesel powered morning trains on the Skagway dock. At noon we walked a half mile into town to catch the steam Powered train to Fraser Meadows.

3. Our train backed into the Skagway station where drinks and snaks for four cars of Disney Cruise Line passengers were loaded aboard.

We took the diesel train up and around the mountains and old mining sites. The real interesting part was all the old rusting steam engines and other train equipment just laying on its side were ever it fell rusting away. Real stuff from a century and a half ago . An amazing place Alask.

Wow.... a newly imagined "LOVE BOAT" movie might even feature an Alaska cruise and a trip on the White Pass & Kukon RR as a side angle on one of the plots. Great idea!

Cruise....steam engines.....hmmmmmm. Might be a consideration. Love that picture of Disney boat next to the train.

Hoping for more details on the cruise portion too.

Do all of the Disney Alaska cruises do the steam train as one of the itinerary options? Or does the motive power vary?

For 2014, all arrivals EXCEPT 5/29, 6/19, 8/14, and 9/4 have the Steam Train itinerary option available. 4 hour, 52 mile round trip. Also offer other White Pass options that include stop offs for hiking, snow shoeing, gold panning, biking, and a round trip where the children get their own special car for the return trip.

Looking at hitting this cruise sometime in next couple years - already booked on the Magic for the Western Caribbean this coming spring, and have already done the Fantasy and Dream. These pictures sure make me want to do the Wander sooner vs later!
