Steam & Excursion > Backwoods Shortline Railroading At It's Best- V&S-1948!Date: 07/22/14 03:51 Backwoods Shortline Railroading At It's Best- V&S-1948! Author: LoggerHogger Back in the late summer of 1948 Guy Lo. Dunscomb and Bert Ward took a week long trip to Northern California and Western Oregon in search of all types of steam railroading. One of their stops was at the Valley & Siletz RR.
After shooting the V&S power and single stall enginehouse at Independence, Oregon, they ventured up the line to the main shops at Hoskins, OR where Guy took this great photo. We see here the actual operating main shops that kept the various steam locomotives in service on this classic Western Shortline. In from of the engine shop door is V&S #50 a Baldwin built 2-6-2 and one of only 2 steam locomotive ever bought new by the V&S. These shops would remain in operation even after the coming of diesels in the mid-1950's and would last in service until the line was finally torn up in 30 years after this photo in 1978. They were really something to see for any railfan, in no matter what decade they chose to visit. Martin Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 07/22/14 03:56 by LoggerHogger.
