Nothing But Smoke And The Caboose Left As #13 Passes!
Author: LoggerHogger

Here is a wonderful scene from a summer day during the days of steam over 74 years ago.

We are standing trackside on the Western Pacific at Twain in the Feather River Canyon with Guy L. Dunscomb when WP freight #13 passes us as she takes the siding. The date is July 4, 1940 and the smoke from the steam locomotive on the head end rises slowly in the warm canyon air as the freight cars slowly roll past us until just the caboose remains in view. The conductor and brakeman have come out to the back platform to watch as #13 comes to a slow stop on the siding. They will have to wait on this siding for the on-coming train that has priority over them.

Until then, they can simply enjoy the beautiful summer day in the canyon.

I agree. But, passes? I think it is in the hole for a meet. Note both crewmen standing in platform to look over a on coming train.

Love shots like this.

I believe the reference is to the train passing the photographer.
