UP 4005, Again - Green River?
Author: donstrack

My previous message from a couple days ago asked if the freshly painted UP 4005 was at Green River. In the previous thread, Steve Gillings and John Bush noted that they had seen UP 4005 in Cheyenne in August 1968.

These five photos show that Dean Gray took other photos of UP 4005, this time on 35mm black and white, and show UP 4005 in a less pretty state, and may be at Green River. The water tank will be the give-away. Green River? or Cheyenne?

Sorry, still no date on the photos.

Two other photo in the series will follow below.

Looks better in these photos than the last time I saw it at the Forney. But that was before December 2000 before they moved.

Incredible photos!!! I spy what looks to be a "3800" series challenger tender in the background of photo 1.

Every photo of #4005 from the early '60s up until the time it was moved inside at the new Forney museum show it without its front number shield, including the photos above. It has a number shield now, and I wonder if it's a replica or if the original was found somewhere.

That looks more like Cheyenne, before it was spruced
up and missing parts replaced for the Forney. I think
the earlier pics are at Cheyenne, too, and that the
rotary plow in the background is the 900075 or 076.

After all, why would they drag it to Cheyenne, then
back to Green River (where they didn't paint locomotives)
just to fix it up for the donation?

Now that Forney keeps it inside, it looks almost
exactly like it does in the earlier-posted shots.

The broken builder plate on the smokebox is proof of the scavenging that existed in the period. Broken plates were left behind after they would not just pop-off in one piece.

Looks like the tender is connected to a three unit turbine.

I'm going to say Cheyenne as well, that appears to be the water tower that was across from the coal tower.

Looks like an ex3800-series tender that had already
been converted to a turbine tender. Note the 6 round
panels on the side at the bottom. That's where the
electric heaters were to keep the oil warm.

Yes, it's Cheyenne. When I was there in August of 1968 the oil tank was immediately to the left of the engine, exactly as shown in these images. I have both slides and prints of this same location. If I'm not mistaken, Steve Gillings does, too.

Attached is another view of the 4005 at Cheyenne in August 1968. To the left is the 4023. The second picture is of the 3985 with the 4023 behind it, also at Cheyenne in August 1968.

Thanks for posting the 4005 images ... FWIW the Forney Museum had a "BigBoy" weekend this past Saturday/Sunday with the 4005 ... it is in great shape and I might venture it is the only BigBoy that you can actually touch and examine close-up ... ain't no stickin' fences or safety folks sayin' ... please step away from the engine ... if you are in or passing through Denver, it's worth the visit ... I-70 and Brighton Road ... plus there's a rotary snowplow on display next to the 4005 ... it don't get much better.
