Excellent. I'm sure at some point she'll be painted green for a period of time, at which point that'll be excellent.

Thanks for the photos, Phil. While myself, along with others hoped for green, we all shared common gratitude that she is simply returning to the rails. She's beautiful in her little black dress.

You're most welcome. I consider myself fortunate to have been there for the primering. I volunteer at TVRM and spent the weekend there with a friend. We helped out with several jobs/tasks on 4501 before it was primed. We also worked on the Southern E8.. Got filthy dirty and loved every minute of it!

I don't think there has been a doubleheader with 4501 and 630 both in black with Southern lettering so that should be something to look forward to.

All... As any old southern steam fan can tell ya (...if they were alive...); the "correct" color for a southern freight type locomotive is black... 4501 wuz also black when it worked on Justice Stearns "Kentucky and Tennessee" railroad... Havin said all that, im glad that 4501 is still runnin folks are enjoyin it, no matter the color...

Excellent photos, looking forward to see photos of her running.

Painting question. When a locomotive is all together how do you paint it? I assume with a sprayer, but how does the paint get on the inside of the running gear, under the boiler, and in the nooks and crannies?. And look good?

By having a person who REALLY knows what he/she is doing, paint her!

If by "inside the running gear" you mean the frames, it's easier to paint the frame when the wheels are dropped. Piece parts like spring rigging, binders, appliances, piping and belly jacketing can be painted before installation.

Different outfits use different techniques. D&S has a paint booth for cars and locomotives, and use sprayers (probably touched up by brush). Strasburg uses (or used to) brushes (and rollers, I think) exclusively.

The formulation of the paint will govern whether it can be sprayed 'in the open' without violating any regulations.

4501 was masked off on Friday 8-15 and then primered on Saturday 8-16. Immron primer was used and it was sprayed on. The shop building was off limits to everybody but the painting crew and the painting crew wore full cover spray painting gear.

Darn, I wanted green! Now I'm going to stomp my feet and refuse to go ride it! Ha! In all seriousness, it's wonderful and I can't wait to see the '01 in steam in person for the first time sometime soon!

Well, last I had heard, there wouldn't be any 21st Century Steam excursions this fall. If this is still the case, even with 4501 practically complete, you'd have to venture down to the Chattanooga area and TVRM territory to see her stretch her legs this year.

2015 is shaping up nicely for steam fans on the east coast with 4501 being complete and, last rumor I heard, 611 will be complete by the end of 2014.
