The Opposite Extremes Of Doghouses On Logging Lokies!
Author: LoggerHogger

I have shown from time to time logging engines that were equipped with "doghouses" for the protection of the head brakeman as he rode the engine tender and watched the loaded log cars for any falling or slipping logs. Here are 2 photos that show 2 very different approaches to this concept.

The first is huge and formidable doghouse mounted on Weyerheauser Timber 2-6-6-2 #120 at Longview, Washington. Clearly this is a first class doghouse that will provide ample room and protection from the elements for the brakeman and even conductor and their tools and lanterns.

The next example is much more simple. We see here West Side Lumber Shay #8 as she drops down out of Camp 8 on her way to Tuolumne, California with her log loads. The date is July 31, 1958 and the blazing Sierra sun is taking the temperatures over 100-degrees. The only protection from this searing sun is provided with this pop-up umbrella that is installed on the tender so the head end brakeman gets some protection.

Most logging engines did not have doghouses at all. However, it is interesting to see the variety of approaches taken on those engines that had them.

As someone said the other day, "there is a prototype for everything"...

Thanks for keeping it interesting!

And, then there was the one Martin recently showed with the great big chair.

The dog house on the 120 looks an awful lot like a small locomotive cab.

If I remember correctly, the 120's was even steam heated!
