Steam & Excursion > Mount Ranier Scenic Railroad AdviceDate: 08/23/14 11:03 Mount Ranier Scenic Railroad Advice Author: djy23 I'll be out in the Seattle area next month and thinking of riding the MRSR steam train on September 14th (it appears there are no weekday runs). It's steam, so I know I would like it. But just wondering if anyone has ridden it lately...I think they offer trips in the morning and afternoon. Feedback? Thanks!
Date: 08/23/14 11:53 Re: Mount Ranier Scenic Railroad Advice Author: JDLX I rode them on July 27th of this year...it appears on September 14th the trains run at 10:00 a.m., 12:45 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. I don't know if there is one trip better than another. The trips run from Elbe to the railroad's shop building at Mineral, where you are allotted about a half hour to wander around the shop complex- the shop building itself is usually off-limits, though they do have the doors opened so you can look inside. The storage buildings holding MRSR's other locomotives are open so that you can go see them, and they have a well done (if a bit romanticized) logging camp interpretive exhibit set up in a couple old camp buildings. In the works for the next couple years are a replica of a sawmill and a miniature train ride (7.5" gauge, or something close to that).
If you have Saturday the 13th open, I'd also suggest you ride the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad: http://steamtrainride.com/ Unfortunately, they are Saturdays only through September. The Northwest Railway Museum at Snoqualmie is also worth a look: http://www.trainmuseum.org/ Enjoy your trip! Rainier (if it's out), clean mountain air, forests, oh and the railroad.
It's more than a railroad now, it's a railroad and logging camp museum. Start at Elbe, run to Mineral and the logging camp museum. Explore the exhibits, get your BBQ lunch (if you're on that run), maybe get a cab ride back. Well worth the trip. Here's some shots from the Grand opening of the museum. As Jeff said, the Northwest Railway Museum and the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad are also worth some time spent. Word of caution, I-5 traffic on weekends can be really tough much of the day, through Seattle, Tacoma and Olympia. Allow lots of time. Not according to their website...under the "Schedules & Fares" tab of their website one can find the following passage on the "To Milburn by Coach": "Departing at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., the roundtrip excursion runs on Saturdays and Sundays until the end of August, and Saturdays only in September." The schedule underneath this passage shows Saturday trips from May 24-September 27 and Sunday trips from May 25-August 31 only. To see for yourself, here's the link: http://steamtrainride.com/milburn/ The next Sunday trips of which I can find mentioned on their site are Pumpkin Trains in October. If they are indeed operating Sunday trains through September, then perhaps somebody better update their website accordingly... ------------------------------------------------------- > Feedback? Thanks! You bet, Kyle, be sure to come ride the MRSR. The weather is almost always great in the PNW in September even as the temperature starts to moderate a little. I'm oiling around the 17 in the picture that Jeff posted and running it (as I will be tomorrow) in the picture that Steve posted and there's a chance that I might be on the volunteer crew on the day you're planning to visit. No matter who's on the engine crew, we're always happy to try to make your day a little more special when you make yourself known to us. Date: 08/24/14 00:33 Re: Mount Ranier Scenic Railroad Advice Author: 6ET I will pass the info on to the people in charge of the website. I have always thought the schedule to be confusing for the public, as it is 1 and 3 o'clock 14 mile round trips Saturday and Sunday, and a 5 pm 18 mile round trip Saturdays only. Also I have been volunteering there for 12 years, and we have been running on Sunday as long as I have been helping there!
