Daylight to Owosso
Author: OKTrainboys

Here are a few pictures of SP4449 in early July 2009 on her way to Owosso flying the ORHF flags. The first two are taken from Durango's red convertible. The third is of her on her way over the continental divide in Montana.....how amazing is this that 4449 and her dedicated crew pulled off this feat! Good times for sure....Cheers!

The epic journey just beginning....SP4449 cruising up the gorge.....climbing to the divide...Doyle did a great job with his 80 inch drivered gal managing these steep uphill grades to Marias Pass.

Very nice photos Mike. That sure was a hell of a trip, and would no longer be possible, what with the enormous level of business on that former GN "Northern Line" of BNSF.

6.6 magnitude under Valparaiso.

masterphots --
Glad you are OK! USGS says M 6.6 --
which is strong enough if not too deep
to do significant damage, and near Valparaiso.

OKTrainboys --
GREAT photos of a gorgeous locomotive
and a wonderful time! Thanks So much for
posting these here. I really like the 4th one --
with the steam around her. Yes, she CAN handle
those grades! She IS "Lima Super Power", after all. :)

Here they're saying 6.2 west of Valpo which puts it in the ocean. In any event, a non-event for us. No reported damage/injuries anywhere in the country. I assume someone checked the subway tracks although the way they do things here maybe not. Airport operations not affectec.

Mike, thanks for triggering the memories of that wonderful trip. This shot somewhere near the great divide just before or after the snowsheds. I was fortunate to make the trip to Minneapolis.

Thank you for the memories. I still regret not running over to talk to Doyle right at the start of Saturday in Owosso, but he had enough people wanting to get a word in edgewise. That was an incredible event and I wish we'd been able to do more of the side events.

My contribution... Excuse the format, best I can do with what I have available. Great trip, finally got to see her in person, chase her across fields, meet the crew and see some amazing run bys!

Well how about on it's way back to Portland?

This photo was at Charlotte, MI at track speed 65 MPH on 7-31-09.

Looks more like she is stopped.

No, the fireman (wonder who?) was just doing his usual great job.

Thanks for your support, but I was looking at the position of the valve gear, and it appears to be centered (as best as I can tell from that photo, since I don't know how to make it zoom in).

Hey Jack, speaking of the orientation of the valve gear, can you estimate at what % cutoff (or clicks from neutral) Doyle usually runs the Daylight when she is hooked up, happy and cruising?

The key to placement of the valve gear is how much throttle he is using. Most times I can just look over and see where he has the power reverse stick, i.e. how much forward, or I can just get up and walk over and look at the back pressure indicator and steam chest pressure gauge. Mostly, I can pretty much tell by the sound of the exhaust at the stack. I have no idea, nor do I care, about percentage of cut-off.

Nope she was definitely at track speed. Pretty cool to see her moving out like that,
the only time I saw her and was impressed even if 261 wins my heart being a Milwaukee Road
fan.

I can't recall if that was with the new or old camcorder I will look and see if I have it
on the new one and upload it.

Thanks, HotWater, for the neat info! That reminds me
of what the 2472's steam-era fireman always told us --
you use all your senses to tell how the engine is doing.
You get a feel for it.

Bingo; Just listen to her, she'll tell you exactly what she wants and exactly what she's doing.
