C&TSRR Rainy day - lots of slipping
Author: mcdeo

Friday, 8/22/14 brought a light rain to the Chama, NM area. This rain was not heavy enough to clean the rails, just light enough to mix a good amount of water and oil. Jeff was at the throttle and had his work cut out for him. Lots of slipping and adjusting, compensating, and sand. The fireman had to keep the pressure up. I don't recall the last time up the hill I saw an engine pop off, the firemen do a great job of balancing the need for steam and knowing the hill...not today, too slippery.

Part 2 coming in the next line.

Part 2. K-36 #489 with a snow plow on front for the trip. Standard 7 car train that they usually run. They can run 8 cars without a helper, but then it would be really difficult in the rain.

What beautiful scenery -- and a VERY impressive
locomotive! Nice and square, too! SUPERB video!
Man, that hoghead is a real expert at handling all
that slipping -- wow.....and so is the fireman! wow.....

All that green is balm to this Californian who really
misses the rain we used to have here.

Thank you for posting the videos. The slipping wheels made me think of the movie "Emperor of the North" when they greased the tracks.
