Setting Sun On Southern Pacific Steam Operations-1958!
Author: LoggerHogger

The afternoonn sun is starting to set in Scramento, California in October 1958 as SP #4460 has arrived from Sparks, Nevada. She is pulling the final steam trip for SP standard gauge steam.

The passengers have left the train nfor the nearby dedication cermonies in front of the depot. SP has placed on display the C.P. Huntington and Cab-Forward #4294 and they are being dedicated while the train is service. Soon the passengers will board th train for the final trip to Oakland where she will arrive after dark.

For now let's look at the setting sun on SP steam.

Thanks Martin. For those who don't already know, the 4460 is preserved at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.

Sad day for sure but a great photo of the event. Certainly glad locomotives like the 4460, 4294, and CP Huntington have been preserved.

Thanks for sharing,

According to Lloyd Stagners's article in Number 4, volume 56 of the National Railway Bulletin (NRHS, 1991), the last SP standard gauge steam run was January 19,1959 on a mixed train at Douglas, Arizona.

As a kid I remember when our T-31 was replaced by a GP-9, wasn't long after that the
station disappeared, 1956. Sigh.

And if you look closely, you'll note that we were running as first 27. That was some trip.

Great photo, Martin. Love the cars, all products of Ford, GM, Chrysler and Studebaker. Not a Honda, Nissan, nor Mazda in sight.
