ATSF 2926 Work Update Week Ending 08/23/2014
Author: Cumbresfan

Focus of work this week was preliminary preparation for the September 27 Open House. A-frames were positioned for use with a large shade tarp to cover various exhibits, food and entertainment. The viewing stairs to the cab were reinforced and made safe; they were prepped for painting. "Lurch" the car mover hooked up to the tender to leave room for a BNSF diesel locomotive which is due to be on display for visitors.

The engineer's side crosshead was found to need a small amount of milling to be able to properly align the it with the steam cylinder. It was removed and delivered to a local machine shop for the work.

Reconnecting wiring for the crossing signals at the 8th street crossing was completed by Herzog and this was followed by installation of the remainder of the crossing ties.

Other work included fabrication of superheater tube bundles and flexible staybolt sleeve welding. Also the machine shop was fabricating various pins and bushings for several brake arms showing uneven wear. And cleaning and painting of various areas of the frame continued.

Photos include superheater fabrication, grade crossing work, stair painting and "Lurch." A video shows it's operation including lowering the flanged wheels to the track. And the kitties are prominently featured as they react to unwinding of an extension cord for drilling holes in the ties.

77 superheater tube pairs remain to be sold - purchasers of the other 65% are honored at the web site. You can make a purchase and find out who has donated to date at the link:

I think what you have there is the "Crosshead GUIDE" and not the crosshead it's self. Thanks for the updates.

Hmmm... I believe it's the crosshead assembly that is shown, the crosshead and its guide. But I am not that familiar with the part(s) to say definitely. A better description is given in the July 5 work status where it is described as crosshead assembly.

Glad you enjoy the updates. When I can, I'll keep them coming!

I enjoy seeing the progress with getting 2926 back into operation, joining 3751 and 3415 in the list of active Santa Fe steamers, and I also look for the kitty photos--you have quite a "clowder" of cats supervising the job.
