The Little Known Pacific Coast Railroad - Renton, WA!
Author: LoggerHogger

It always amazes me how relatively little you see on the Pacific Coast Railroad Company even thought it operated in the heart of the most populous part of Western Washington State.

Based out of Seattle, WA the PCR operated a steam powered standard gauge line for over 63 miles south to Renton and with spurs to Maple Valley, Black Diamond and the like.

Fortunately some railfans did take the time to follow and photograph the PCR. One of those was Al Farrow who caught PCR #15 leaving the yards in Renton, WA in September 1951. Coal fired #15 had been turned out new in 1907 by ALCO's Rhode Island Locomotive Works.

#15 has a fresh load of coal and just topped off her tender with water. She is ready for a full days work on this classic shortline.

Not to be confused with the narrow gauge Pacific Coast Railway which operated in the San Luis Obispo area of Central California.

Mike,

Not to be confused with the PCRy - but they were both owned by the same company.

Wasn't that one referred to as the SOUTH Pacific Coast Railway?

Mike was right. The "Pacific Coast Ry" was a 3' gauge railroad that ran out of San Luis Obisbo, CA.

The South Pacific Coast Ry was also narrow gauge, but an entirely different railroad that ran from Alameda to Santa Cruz, California.

And the "South" pacific coast railroad was located North of the Pacific Coast Railway to boot!

And then there was the "North Pacific Coast" narrow gauge which was actually North of both the South Pacific Coast and the Pacific Coast.

There are good books about all these railroads out there...
