Steam & Excursion > SP Train 27 and SP Train 27Date: 08/29/14 15:25 SP Train 27 and SP Train 27 Author: TTM Ralph Buhr caught SP 4192 and 4326 setting side by side in Roseville both with number 27, The Overland, in their number boards. Don't know if SP changed out units or if the 4326 will be added for the climb up the hill. No date but would guess early 1950's.
Thanks for looking, Tom Date: 08/29/14 15:27 Re: SP Train 27 and SP Train 27 Author: HotWater TTM Wrote:

I sure didn't see any diesels in that fantastic photo! This is most likely engine change because the cab forward's top speed was too slow west of Antelope and on the Cal-P.

they could change engines at Roseville? Two-headed signal with a numberplate (?)... this is before 1952? Date: 08/29/14 17:10 Re: Roseville Author: agentatascadero Great photo...and it shows the westbound Overland Limited. Normal practice would have this train powered by an AC from Sparks to Roseville, where power is again changed to the 4300 as shown. I have an SP video which shows this engine change at Roseville. Eastbound, the process would, of course, be reversed. AA

locomotives! Man, those were the days! Date: 08/29/14 22:42 Re: SP Train 27 and SP Train 27 Author: EtoinShrdlu >4326 is on the east main? That was the only way they could change engines at Roseville?
On through psgr trains, yes. >Two-headed signal with a numberplate (?)... this is before 1952? Why not? All the switches were hand throw (thrown by what became known as the 2-4-5 Herder) until the UP started tossing CTC money around. The EB governing signal on the Eastbound at the West end of Watsonville Jct yard was a two-headed, number plated signal, just like the one in the pic. The switches there were hand-throw too. the usual Roseville engine change pre-1952 used the track just north of the west main. The semaphore for the west main was north of that track, with a dummy mast-- no idea whether the change to a searchlight was part of the 1952 changes. |
