Were they burning something special, or was this special power, that necessitates spark arrestors on the exhaust? (I'm an ex firefighter and may not have the terminology right...)

Most of the Short Line RR's in California had spark arrestors on their steam engines. Hot chunks of carbon build up could be thrown out starting fires.
