Steam & Excursion > Atlantics...Date: 09/17/14 08:45 Atlantics... Author: Keystone1 Anyone want to take a guess what and where was the last 4-4-2 Atlantic running daily in regular service? (NOT a trick question.)
Date: 09/17/14 08:56 Re: Atlantics... Author: HotWater No.
Date: 09/17/14 09:02 Re: Atlantics... Author: RNinRVR I would guess the Milwaukee A1.
Sharon Evans Glen Allen, VA Date: 09/17/14 09:59 Re: Atlantics... Author: CNWH-1 I went to boot camp at Cape May, NJ in 1956 and rode to Cape from 30th Street station behind a PRS E-6. And return to 30th Street after boot camp.

PRSL Probably E6 #460? Wes C. Date: 09/17/14 10:13 Re: Atlantics... Author: Emmo213 It's probably still a trick question. If "regular service" meaning for regularly scheduled service then probably PRR #7002.
Date: 09/17/14 10:35 Re: Atlantics... Author: JohnMcIvor Perhaps 2016 when the new-build Atlantic is completed on Britain's Bluebell Railway!
Details at: http://www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/locos/atlantic/ recreating the 1911 vintage locomotive designed to work between Brighton and London. John McIvor svsfilm.com Date: 09/17/14 12:07 Re: Atlantics... Author: Tominde Regular schedule service pre retirement I'll say PRR E6s 1957.
Date: 09/17/14 14:23 Re: Atlantics... Author: agentatascadero Be careful with this quizmeister.....the last such quiz was about 4-8-4s, and that answer was "Bolivia". This one could be Pluto for all I know. AA

Author: airbrakegeezer If my memory is correct (not a given, at my advanced geezerhood), the last Atlantics in regular, everyday service were operated by Camjnhos de Ferro de Mozambique (CFM) on an isolated line in NE Mozambique into the 1970's; I remember seeing photos, I think in a Trains mag. article.

Date: 09/18/14 08:47 Re: Atlantics... Author: PERichardson Mozambique in the 1970s, maybe later. I recall these were built in the 1940s. They ran out onto a pier in the Indian Ocean...photogs waded out to shoot them. Henry Posner owned/owns one which I believe was last stored in Kenya.
Date: 09/18/14 09:11 Re: Atlantics... Author: Keystone1 Well...airbrakegeezer and masterphots...you are correct. I went to Mozambique in 1972 to see steam. I did the action (including Garrats, 2-10-2's, Pacific's, 2-8-2T's and Prairies around Lorenco Marques. Then I went to the U.S. Consulate to get their permission to go to Nampula in the north. The consul saw me, and asked me why in the world would a "tourist" want to go to Nampula? I told him. He said he has no authority to stop me, but, please know that there is a civil war going on very near there. BTW, 2-months before, the previous consul was shot and killed at the very desk at which I was speaking to this man. Anyway, I flew up and got there to see the world's last two Atlantics, alternating in passenger service on the planet. Henschel built them in the 1930's. I rented a taxi to drive out and chase one coming in from the countryside into town. All of a sudden, the taxi driver stopped the car. I said, onward. He said NO! I asked why? He told me that beyond this point...the roads were mined. He would not go any further. So, I had to take my first action shot there, and chase her back home to the station. These were the last two 4-4-2 Atlantics in regular service in the world.
