Southern Pacific's Early #1010 - All Shinned Up!
Author: LoggerHogger

While most folks would expect a 4-4-0 or an 0-6-0 when you speak of a low numbered Southern Pacific steam engine, that was not always the case.

Take SP #1010 for example. This 2-4-2T was built by Baldwin for SP in March 1884. She was originally #80 when she arrived, but in 1905 she was assigned the #1010 we see here.

David Joslyn caught her at the Sacramento Shops right after she received a shopping. This explains the brilliant paint and the missing drive rods.

There were only 2 other 2-4-2T engines of this size built for SP in the same time period. While we know what happened to them, the fate of #1010 after her SP service was over is still unknown. Maybe someone can fill that in for us.

That's the best image I've seen of SP1010. It was originally SP80, then P&O #8, Sac. Shops (2nd) #1, and finally SP1010.

I don't know the history after it left the roster, but Menke's The Compendium Companion" provides a little more information while she was still working for the Espee. SP1010 was first stationed at Dunsmuir, later at Bayshore shops, San Francisco, and finally at Sacramento. It was scrapped in November 1936 at Sacramento.

I have never been a bit fan of 'T' type engines . . . but I gotta say, she is a beauty!
