Steam & Excursion > SP Daylight 4-8-4 with black skirtsDate: 09/20/14 15:30 SP Daylight 4-8-4 with black skirts Author: PERichardson Today's earlier post about the BNSF 4449 in black got me into the slide pile looking for an all-black GS. Found a couple, one all black including skirts and the other with a Daylight cab/tender.
1. #4419 helps the westbound Imperial upgrade on Beaumont Hill, ca late 1940s. Ralph Lettelier original. 2. #4444 with a Railway Club of SoCal fantrip executes a runby near Colton, CA on 4/16/50. And there in lies the problem with trying to duplicate that with 4449, i.e. the sanitizing of all that plumbing and stuff hidden by the skirting just isn't worth all THAT LABOR! Agreed but the point of this post is to simply show a couple of GS, one all black, including skirts, and the other in black but still retaining Daylight colors on the cab and tender. There were quite a few in both versions, saw them in my early train watching days at Glendale (CA) station. I was born & raised in New Jersey, so, sadly, all I saw was Jersey Central Pacifics and camelbacks, plus PRR K4s steam power. I sure would have preferred the SP, plus NO SNOW! I'm not a steam guy, but can you explain the sanitizing claim? Not sure what that means pertaining to the plumbing and stuff under the skirts. It's ironic that you say that it isn't worth all that labor since from my understanding the SP removed the skirts to save on labor. Probably means it's a lot easier to keep the skirts washed than to laboriously have to keep all that piping and crap clean and presentable. The labor saving touted in the old days was because the skirts didn't have to be removed and replaced to work on something or inspect something under them. When these things were running all the time, that would add up pretty quickly. Limited access to areas that needed inspection and servicing or repair on a frequent basis was a common complaint about streamlined and even semi- streamlined steam locomotives back in the day. It's why there are photos out there of streamlined locos running with large segments of the skirting and shrouding removed, especially during WWII, when there simply wasn't time for that between runs. Interesting statement since SP didn't remove the skirts during WWII; only painted them black. Since its resurrection, 4449 has been configured in number of schemes, some of which never occurred during its service life. Always wonder why it hasn't been configured in a scheme for which it ran for perhaps 40% of its in-service life. They also bought some without skirts right from the factory. Date: 09/23/14 06:52 Re: SP Daylight 4-8-4 with black skirts Author: HotWater BCHellman Wrote:

After American Freedom Train service, she pas repainted BACK to her most used red, black, and orange post 1946 "Daylight" scheme, with the large "billboard" SOUTHERN PACIFIC tender lettering, and the train indicator boxed moved rearward on the skyline casing. For one short period, she was black, with the smaller Southern Pacific Lines lettering higher up on the tender sides. She is now painted & configured in her "as delivered 1941" appearance. Where did it go? The excursion used 4444 from LAUPT to Colton, then 2-6-6-2 3930 from there to Beaumont, CA. A photo of 3930's part of the trip and some more description can be found here: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?10,2660866 Date: 09/23/14 23:16 Re: SP Daylight 4-8-4 with black skirts Author: BCHellman Evan_Werkema Wrote:

Beaumont seems like an odd destination, but given the slogging speed of a 2-6-6-2 I guess it would be too ambitious to run to Indio and return. The 40% of in-service configuration I meant was all black, no skirts, large Southern Pacific on the tender, a configuration for which she ran from approximately 1950 to retirement in 1956. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe the reincarnated 4449 has been configured in this state. At any rate, she looks good in Daylight dress as well as stripped black, a testimony that Lima could do no wrong. |
