Steam & Excursion > Rails Being Removed From Georgetown Loop High Bridge!Date: 09/22/14 03:48 Rails Being Removed From Georgetown Loop High Bridge! Author: LoggerHogger Not all historic railroad events took place on warm sunny days for them to be photographed by Railfans in comfort. In this instance, Dick Kindig had to done his winter cloths and boots to capture the sad sight of the rails being removed from the Georgetown Loop.
The date is March 1, 1939 and fresh snow has fallen to make the job of the scrapping crew assigned to Colorado & Southern #68 all that much more miserable. They have just finished removing the rails from the High Bridge on the Loop when Kindig climbed a near-by hillside to record this view. The train is making it's way slowly back to Georgetown, CO as they remove the rail along this scenic route. With the rails removed, the bridge itself was sold to local mining companies for $450. They dismantled the bridge and used the steel to shore up their mines in the area. Fortunately today we can enjoy this marvel of railroad engineering with the new Georgetown Loop and the replacement bridge erected in 1984. Martin Edited 2 time(s). Had to go take a heart pill! You're telling me? I already had a heart attack on Saturday (for real, and I'm doing fine, thank you) and don't need another. Great photo of the old removal. Isn't it great when we actually get a line back? - Bruce |
