The Consist For The 2926
Author: 4000Class

Much is being said and photographed about the restoration of the ATSF 2926 by the NMSL&RHS. But, eventually the 2926 will be ready to pull an excursion.

My question is ' Is there currently, in place, an excursion consist for the 2926 to pull? If so, what is the consist? '.

And, ' If there is not, then what is the plan to assemble a consist? '.

Assume it will be a fleet of Amtrak coaches... or maybe, horrors, the bi-lelels with
the road runner on them. Maybe a gathering of private cars from time to time.

Good question - what do they run when AT&SF #3751 is on excursion? Local commuter
cars and /or Amtrak and a few private cars.

Would be great to hear otherwise.

Pure speculation on my part, but I would guess PVs Silver Lariat, Silver Solarium and Plaza Santa Fe would sign on. They have been together on many steam excursions. Bill Hatrick and Overland Trail and Colonial Craft as well. The Sandbergs fleet, maybe, and probably Amfleet coaches. This will be a big event and should attract the PV owners, though on the last outing with 4449 to Bend, conversations with some of the owners were not encouraging, as the costs of storage and switching operations are getting pretty staggering.

Does anyone remember that beautiful matched silver consist that the NKP 587 used to haul? Where are they? Do the owners want to make a little money with them? They were originally Santa Fe, weren't they?

Yep, I know where they are. In operation but landlocked. Indiana Transportation Museum.

I was given the impression that it was the lack of a proper consist that ultimately sunk the ATSF 2925 project in the mid 70's. It was determined the cost of acquiring the needed cars (I would assume they were being picky and wanted only ATSF heritage) would be at least, or even more, that restoring the 2925 itself.
A train to pull is no small thing to consider!

Used to be in the ancient days that if you needed a flatcar to haul your merchandise, you didn't have to own it yourself, the railroad would provide it for a fee. If they didn't have one, they could rent one from some other railroad.

Have things changed so much that passenger cars aren't available for some perdiem?

Yes, things have definitely CHANGED A LOT. First, the big class one railroads, i.e. UP, BNSF, NS, CSX, CPR, and CN now only had "business car" passenger fleets, and are not about to "rent them out" to some other organization. Those cars are used for shippers, and other dignitaries, for corporate usage. The NKP 765 group had to rent/lease a group of private cars, which included their own power car, for most of their operations on NS.

Private passenger cars are indeed available, but come with extremely high deadhead costs since they can only be transported around the country via Amtrak. Thus, any and all of THOSE private cars MUST be "Amtrak compatible/certified", which can run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars for that certification.

Helllooooo! Mr. Gates. Are you listening?

The NMSL&RHS needs (about what? 15?) fifteen passengers cars constructed along the ATSF Super Chief design scenario.

Please supply & we will give you a cookie!

Now there's a idea. Just call up the Pullman Company
and ask for some of the pool cars they have in their
vast fleet of standby equipment. Tourist cars would
be just fine, along with some lounges and parlor cars.

Seriously, your suggestion is kind of what's done with
Amtrak cars on excursions. The customer does pay what
amounts to per diem on the cars, plus the deadhead costs
to get them there and back and whatever switching costs
are incurred at each end and enroute.

Pretty much the same thing with private cars.
