Earnie's Ridge Looking At Mud Tunnel
Author: Wacky-roger1942

My friend Steve Forney and I hiked down to Earnie's Ridge with my 500mm lens to shoot the train coming out of mud tunnel. We were still shooting the train on the other side of Phantom Curve when a plane came by and then turned and went over us pretty close.

You never know what you are going to see when chasing a train.

Isn't it fun when they do that for you!

Treat pictures!

The air crew were probably practicing low level flying. Kind of a neat training run. I had a friend who flew C130's kind of the this plane and the stories he told were amazing.

One time when my wife and I were staying in Ouray, I heard some jets and to my surprise, 4 warthogs dove down in the canyon for the Silverton side and flew up the canyon, then about 15 minutes later, they went to opposite direction, flew up the canyon and then almost went straight up to get out.

Of course no camera each time.

Interesting looking C-130 with that nose fairing and the ones on the aft fuselage. Maybe the pilot is a railfan and was collecting data on the NG operation?

It's a MC-130P and is probably out of the schoolhouse at Kirkland AFB, NM. Kirkland is the military side of Albuquerque International Airport.
MC-130's specialize in low level flying and prefer the dark. They do a lot of flying using Night Vision Goggles.
They're the official airline of the Green Berets.

Friend of mine has an Airstream parked on a hilltop near Jemez, northwest of Santa Fe. They fly low altitude by his place all the time headed straight toward Antonito/Chama. V22 Osprey follow the same route.

I'll bet his lens cost a bit more than your 500mm and probably produced considerably high-resolution of you than you got of him !

C130s are neat aircraft in all their variations. Damn things can land and take off just about anywhere other than water, and I wouldn't put that beyond their abilities if someone wanted it bad enough.

Classiclights, that's probably a FLIR, forward looking Infra Red turret.

And in their "Gunship" variant they do a very effective job of screwing up military equipment and killing bad guys! We had some of the first ones over in SEA in the late 60s.
