In memory of the dead? (pt. 1)

I sure hope my title is wrong. But when I look at the dark morass called ‘Union Pacific Steam’ I get a really bad feeling…

1. UP 3985 approaches the KS hwy 16 overpass in Onaga, KS on October 12, 2010.

I agree. I worked that eastbound trip from the political convention in LA returning 3985 back to Cheyenne, in 2000 or 2001 (can't remember), as photographed by Ed K above. In spite of the desert heat, it was a great trip, with a 3 or 4 day stop-over in Ogden, UT for a big motor cycle convention. The city even changed their name to "Hogden" for the weekend. Sure met a lot of nice bikers there, and many of the folks referred to 3985 affectionately as "Tired Iron", when they discovered that she was built in 1943.

I do have more, and I will post more. Not only of the 3985, but also the 844. That's what the "pt.1" thing is all about. I am first & foremost a railfan photographer, so I'm tired of NOT seeing working shots of both engines from happier times. I intend to rectify this situation, and I would love seeing other photographers' 'happier' shots as well. Even if they are repeat-posts.

BTW: I put 100% conviction into my lead sentence up above...

That convention trip was in 2000 Jack. We did have a good trip then. In fact you and I had several good trips together.

Definitely a happier time heading west on 10-12-10. Stopped for a while at Topeka. 3985's front end, and one for the pipefitters.

Great shot Lance! I chased it from Cheyenne and watched it leave Lodgepole at the beginning of the Missouri trip. Also watched it pull the Circus train two days before and back home to Cheyenne the next day. Three days in a row of chasing 3985. And that was the last time I saw it perform. The first time I saw it ever was the night before it pulled the APL train from Cheyenne to North Platte. Then we chased it with 128loads including the water cars and the Caboose the next day. Some where I have video of the crew switching with it in Council Bluffs rearranging their train to go home. It was a great 20 years.

If you look close that is the 8444 in the roundhouse. We renumbered it in 89 when Lynn and I got on the crew. We had a ceremony with the Lewis's, and new number plate, and a bottle of champagne. It was a thrill to be able to fire the stack train. To see them take 4 or 5 units off and we put 3985 on with the support equipment was an invite to a challenge for sure. I stood on the bridge at Archer to watch it top the hill and it did me proud having helped bring it back to life. I fired from Lodgepole to North Platte and it performed flawlessly.

The appliance in Dennis Garrets second photo: Is that a feedwater pump? Driven by steam in the smaller insulated pipe coming out of the top? TIA.

It was 2000 Jack and I was in LA when she was at the garden track and got a lot of pics of her, plus meeting Bob3985, Lynn and his wife and the best Steam Boss Himself, Steve Lee and got a pic of of them, but one thing I ain't gonna forget is me and a railfan showed up, I'm takin' pics, a UP Rail cop shows up, I'm cool, but the other fan next to me got smart, that was my signal to head to breakfast (took the early Metrolink down) and when I came back me and the cop were joking about the E Units since they were split in certain sections of Shops Yard when it was still going! Wish I met you then though!

That's the cold water pump, which moves the water from the tender to the feedwater heater, which I assume is located in the smoke box on this engine. Then the hot-water pump delivers the water into the boiler. The fireman controls the speed of the hot-water pump. The cold water pump fills the heater automatically, regulated by a float in the heater.
