That is part of the tender from a D&RGW class M-75 3 cylinder 4-8-2.

Here it is in 1951 from Life Magazine coverage by photographer Wallace Kinkade. Magazine feature on the end of the San Juan Passenger Train.

And a picture taken 10/1/14 from the approximate same angle as the one in Life Magazine.

Also another view during operational era.

Why are the background mountains so close up in the old photo...as compared to the newer photo?

Because while both shots are of the same tank at "Arboles", one is at "New" Arboles, while the original shot is at "Old" Arboles which is now at the bottom of Navajo Lake.
