Saturday's trip was a "Chama Steam" sponsored trip. Though we didn't have many on board, those that went unanimously enjoyed it as the weather was warm, the sun bright, clouds and wind absent. We had numerous stops for runbys, varied the engine positions in the consist and traveled the balloon loop at Osier with no problem.

Numerous pictures have been posted by others on the Chama Steam/Dead Goat Saloon site (Google it for a link). At least one videographer was on board and will likely produce a video.

It was a fun train to see.

Wow. I've attended a couple of Chama based photo freights, but that's the best consist I've seen. All you would need is some live cows in the stockcars, and some fresh cow poo stains on the outside.

It is really representative of the type of freight carried on the line in a 1950's autumn: Stock cars (for cattle and sheep), box cars for freight, oil tank cars for crude from Gramps and Farmington oil fields, and pipe for oil well drilling. What is really amazing are the number and type of freight cars remaining in the Chama yard.! I don't have a number, but easily twice the number of cars on this train. And that doesn't include the MOW cars, special cars or the remaining rider boxes from the early days of the passenger service. Easily a National Historic Landmark.

[Edit: For those that want to count, the Google Earth image of 5/31/2013 is the clearest photo I have seen of the yard and cars. If you look closely you can see an engine at the Chama station ready to depart. The bus from Antonito has already arrived so that would put the time about 9:50 a.m. on Friday, May 31.]

[Edit 2: The Antonito Google image of 9/28/2013 is equally clear. The two large white-roofed buildings at the east end of the loop track are the Friends car repair facility and their newly built pole-shed for covered car storage.]

I think you'll enjoy the view at Osier! They caught both photo freights (just east of Osier) and both passenger trains (at the lunchroom)! Pretty fun catch, really.

Also, nice video, Roger. I know I was just down there a month ago, but I want to go back! Thanks for filling the void.
~wko - fingers are crossed for next summer

I think if you look closely at the Osier image, you will see the passenger trains fade out west toward the lunchroom. It turns out that Osier is where the 5/31 and 9/28 images are joined and on 5/31, the trains had not yet left the stations. The 9/28 freights were from Chama Steam 2013 featuring locomotives CATS #463 and DRHS #315, both lettered Rio Grande
