Black Hills Central 2-6-6-2T #110
Author: MaryMcPherson

I first became acquainted with the Black Hills Central Railroad back in the early 90s when I lived in the area, southeast of Rapid City. At that time the current owners had taken over and had just begun to improve the property, which still had the long unused third rail in place from three-foot gauge trains that ran in the late fifties and early sixties. The railroad was weed-grown, and showed the years of neglect under the previous owners.

Fast forward two decades........

I agree with Martin, that's a great video - I can watch it over and over again. I rode the 110 on the last revenue trip for Rayonier and it never had a bark like that, or any other tank mallet I've ever heard!

Thanks!

A 4% grade with an 8 car train will make for good stack music every time!

I knew there was a six percent spike in there. I always thought it was a bit further down by the forest service access road.

Very nice video. Makes me miss the place even more. Last time I was there was 2012 riding one of my Fairmont Motorcars. Was there every year before that since 96. The hardest pull for Motorcars is right at the summit of Tin Mill heading back to Hills City. The tight curve doesn't help.
The best stack talk I've heard on the BHCRR is when they would double head 7 and 104 with seven cars. This was when 110 was down for boiler wash and before the Geep. The 7 really barks when it's working, to bad its just a billboard now. Some day I'll figure out how to post 8 MM on TO so all can enjoy it.

Great video. It's hypnotic to watch the pan shots and the pacing where she is just clanking along with all the monkey motion going.
Where is that interurban car from?
I'd like to hear them start up in simple and then change over to compound.

Wonderful video! This is a great line to ride and chase as the blacktop county road crosses the tracks like 18 times or something like that.

The interurban cars are old Oregon Electric cars that once were used on the Vernonia South Park & Sunset Steam Railroad.

That is a one terrific video. I spent a number of weeks out there in 94 with the army on an exercise in the Black Hills. Got to see a little of the railroad but never got to ride. Definitely want to go back. Thanks.

Thanks!

This shoot was the first time I went to a location with several days of filming looking to shoot a number of pre-planned shots and get enough material to do a show on a specific subject.

Awesome video! I never knew there was such a thing as a articulated tank steam engine! What a gorgeous melodious whistle! Thanks for showing us the video! Tom

Excellent video! Is this line connected to a 'live' railroad anywhere or is it orphaned completely now?
