Where is the world's biggest today ?
Author: hinton42

With the UP's big engines sidelined for now, where are the biggest steam locomotives that can operate today? Are they still in the USA ? in North America ?

I believe that now the SP&S 700 is the largest by engine weight. But only until the 611 is in service.

So the restoration of 611 will be completed before the restoration of C & O 1309?

And we thank you for that, Mr. Samuels. The ORHF operates steam locomotives on your rails during the Christmas season, for the enjoyment of the people who live in Portland and the vicinity. I think everyone, the riders, the volunteers who work the trains, your railroad employees, appreciate these wonderful experiences. I know from volunteer experience there that the kids REALLY enjoy the trips. Thank you again.

Probably, but it wouldn't matter anyway. My research tells me that 611 has an engine weight of 490,000 lbs., while the 1309 only comes in at 400,000. Whenever it's done, the ATSF 2926 will be then be the winner at about 510,000 lbs.

Whoops! I should have done some research prior to posting.

And it will be running before any UP locomotive will. Can not wait to see her run up to Santa Fe or Raton.....

I believe I read that the flexible staybolt cap work on the 2926 was now finished. The mechanical lubricators are remounted and the lines flushed out. Engine is trammed, cross heads rebuilt and cylinders honed. The superheater bundles are welded up ready to install...can installing the tubes be far behind?

right, but a beyer-garratt 4+8+4..4+8+4 is more like a yellowstone or big boy articulated engine and a garratt doesn't have a traditional tender, but uses it's two ends as tenders with the boiler in the middle. so if you want to include tender weight, then the 2926 is around 975,000 lb.

dave, out.
