All Good Things Come To An End-SP's 2nd Cab Forward!
Author: LoggerHogger

When she was first delivered from the factory in February 1910 #4003 was only the second Cab Forward produced by Baldwin for the Southern Pacific. She was built as a compound engine and years later she was simpled. She had years of dedicated service to the SP and racked up hundreds of thousands of miles in train service over Donner Pass and all over the SP system.

With her glory days behind her, she found herself parked in SP's Sacramento Shops scrap yard in March 1948. Her tender had been removed for other service which only added to her lonely appearance when Guy L. Dunscomb happened upon her as a lone scrapper was starting to reduce this once proud engine to just a pile of parts.

She still looks proud as she poses for what would surely be her last portrait. Good Bye old girl, you served your owner well.

Martin

Contrary to lawyers and news reports, the stuff doesn't leap up off the ground and eat you. Fine particles of dust blowing around are the major concern, and those are unlikely if the stuff is damp or there is no wind. Judging from the clear air, there probably isn't a lot of wind here.

For that matter blue asbestos is the stuff to worry about, not the common grey stuff shown here.

Were all railroads' 4000s articulated? U.P. Big Boys were 4000, and here we're reminded SP's, cab forwards as well.

Not true!! all asbestos is harmful when it gets broken up (frangible) and distributed in fine pieces into the atmosphere

Blue asbestos? I think you need to research better..There are a ton of Automotive and Shipyard workers who's illness be to differ with that ...Any Asbestos is need for concern.

I do to think any engineer or fireman shed a tear when they cut those up. From everything I have heard/read they were poor steamers, hard to fire and rough as hell to ride in.
