A little assistance please with a location for 2 steam
Author: jdb

I recently scanned a couple slides of these locomotives. The date, 6-22-86, is on the slides but no location. "I think" they went to Steam Expo 86 in Vancouver, BC. (I wouldn't bet on that though) If I had to guess for a location I'd start with either Milpitas or Warm Springs.

I left the Bay Area 20+ years ago and last week I returned for a funeral. Came down by Starlight and rented a car in San Jose. Had a little free time and got TOTAL lost. Was unable to get to the tracks at old haunts. That is if I was able to find the old haunts. From the train I was unable to spot a location where you could photograph anything where the old SJ roundhouse was.

Didn't see a single freight when I might have had an chance to take a photograph. I could tell there were several during the services. Had to go over the Altamont and took the side trip along the railroad. Trees have grown up in one place and "Posted" signs were in others. And no trains there either.

After turning in the car I used the VTA light rail/bus system. It worked very well but with all the street running it sure seemed slow.

I thought BART was going to be into San Jose by now but I didn't encounter it. That Mall where the old Ford plant was left this country boy with his jaw hanging down. Do old people get their exercise by "mall walking" there? I don't think that counting laps is required....

Thanks for any help.

jb

They both went up to Canada and returned to the corp yard at Shinn St in Fremont, CA. Both locomotives are now in Niles Canyon, the #2 has been operational since 2002.

Lurch is right. Here is #2 in great form at Sunol and at Brightside on the Niles Canyon Railroad tracks, date is April 5, 2013.

jdb, this change in the SF area has been noted by a few of the survivors. It's consistent with the phrase 'it's all crap now'.

Maybe that has something to do with why I'm sitting in Denver right now.

I suppose that is true for you; there are many who like The Bay very much. I suppose that a few folks have left Denver because it is "all crap now." To each his/her own...

I'll have to agree with that.

Amazed at all the new construction just over the past few years...at both locations.

jdb,

The photos where taken at the SP Warm Springs yard. At that time behind the NUMMI plant which is now the Tesla plant.

I left Denver, back in California. And glad I don't have to shovel that white crap any more. :)

I took this photo about a year ago. The steamies out at Brightside wanted to move the 12 and 5 closer to the shops. I just happen to catch her when the tarp was removed. In terms if she'll be operational again, the latest rumors (mind you these are rumors), Pickering 12 is next in line after Sierra 30 is back and she won't retain her picking colors but be repainted into flat black and be restored as Sierra Ry. 12. Looking forward to that day but that is a long way down the road. She's actually in very good shape despite her forgone appearance. From what I was told (rumors again), she needs minor boiler work, a 1472 inspection and a new dynamo. Her current one is in service on the Robert Dollar 3.
