I think in late 2016 as I believe they did their last
inspection prior to the Grand Canyon trip in 2002.

Are there any trips being planned between now and 2016?

The website for the 3751, www.SBRHS.org does not show any scheduled operations but in talking to a couple of the folks in the SBRHS I think they are working on a possible return to San Diego and maybe a trip over Cajon to Barstow. From past experience I know it takes a lot of work before any thing happens and I know the 3751 group doesn't like to announce anything until plans are pretty firm. It actually amazes me that with an all volunteer group these operations ever occur.

There have been 36 operations of 3751 since 1991.

3751 has until April 2017 before its FRA boiler recertification. A number of possible outings have been identified between now and then, but much discussion, coordination and planning must occur still before any of the trips are considered "sure enough" to advertise. How many of these possible outings will become reality is anyone's guess at this time.

I don't want to take away from the people who did the work and care for this engine but would it get out to play more and be more likely to run mainline trips if it was based somewhere else? I always think of it as all dressed up and no place to go.

I assume you mean "somewhere else," as in somewhere where they will actually allow her to be fired and work? I mean no offense to anyone, but from my trackside experiences watching 3751 "run by," there is no need for any boiler inspections. Since she is more or less just PUSHED around SoCal by diesels, why even bother to fire her? Oh, I forgot, so they can blow the whistle.

I do not know about being pushed, but when I say a run by soth of Oceanside, she was blasting up the hill pretty good......

I would rather have 3751 a couple times a year running vs no steam coming out of UP.

The one thing that does bother me is the fact she does not have a interior storage either in LA or San Bernadino....

I was not aware that 3751 is not kept indoors. That is absolutely amazing to me. Regardless of my feelings on her operation, nobody can say that the locomotive hasn't been restored to a magnificent level. For her to not have a proper, indoor storage facility is just NUTS! Anyone have an empty engine house available?

Well, I see you are back to bash the 3751 folks again! Don't you EVER get tired of this constant "beating the dead horse"? You have no idea what it takes to run nor fire ANY steam locomotive, so why don't you just give it a rest!!!!

You are obviously unfamiliar with the greater Los Angeles Basin's climatology. If you're going to keep something stored outside--there are few better places to try it than in LA.

Yes! Build a shed to keep all that damn sunshine and fairly low humidity off of it.

There was a time it was worth keeping metal and painted things inside to keep the smog from eating them while you watched.

That's been gone for probably 20 years now. If you have a painted something, rinse it off about once a month, and use a car wash brush on the end of a hose (available from Costco for about $25) every few months.

I'm just glad they got the right leadership that actually is doin' things instead of what Ed's doing over in Cheyenne for cryin' out loud, I wouldn't mind heading to Cali to chase her myself if she does do an excursion to Barstow, I know it would be better doing that compared to her last trip to Arizona a few years ago!

When you say "somewhere else," I assume you mean a geographical
location that is not in the middle of very busy and crowded rail
lines in all directions.

Having been trackside in Carlsbad and on several runs, 3751 pulls much of her own weight! On the AAPRCO trip in 08, Bob himself told me a couple nights later during a car party that he had never had the fuel valve open as far as he did that day climbing Miramar hill. You could feel each rotating rhythm of the rods throughout the train. Diesels do less than you think on these trips... Be thankful she runs and enjoy!
