The Face Of Steam Power Never Looked Better-1940!
Author: LoggerHogger

All too often railfans back in the day and even today became to dependent on the 3/4 roster shot to capture on film their favorite locomotives. Fortunately there were a few who recognized that the majesty of steam power in particular could be captured from different angles as we see here.

The date is April 18, 1940 and Bert H. Ward is visiting one of his favorite steam shortlines, the McCloud River Railroad at McCloud, California. While wandering through the roundhouse area he spots the handsome face of McCloud 2-8-2 #14 as she takes on water before taking her morning train to Pondosa. Bert is immediately struck with the handsome face that Baldwin has put on this 1907 built, first of their 90-ton Mikes, as it gleams in the morning sun. Bert realizes this portriat must be of a head-on shot and not a 3/4 shot to properly capture the feeling of this engine at that moment.

Thanks Bert, you nailed it!
