AFT #4449 39 years ago in San Francisco
Author: weather

My scanner on my Epson printer is only 600 DPI and at the moment I don't expect to get anything a better but it is in my future plans. While the pictures are sharp, the quality of the scan is not. In any event, I found a better picture of the #4449 two blocks north of the Ferry Building in San Francisco on the way to Aquatic Park for display. When I got there, I went out on the Pier to take pictures from a different advantage point. In the first photo is taken after the crew had hooked up the hoses to water the tender from a City Fire Hydrant. There was a discussion on who was going to pay for the 22,000 gallows, Maybe Ed Immel can shed some light on this. The next two photos look across the Bay waters at the engine and the baggage car. Here is the same view today, without the Embarcadero Freeway.

The last photo is in a different location. The last photo is way north of the first photo, turned around and looking south. The 1st photo is looking north from south of the Ferry Bldg. Just being accurate here-great photos and look back!

Man, O man, is that first photo great!
In like all of them! Thanks so much for

Long live the SP 4449!

Thanks Coach for reply. I may have mis-undertstood, but both views look south. The Embarcadero was moved east, replacing the Freeway.

What you have there is the Tool Car, or the Crew Car. (#76) We called it by both names pretty much equally.

It wouldn't really matter much except that there actually WAS a Baggage Car, #33 (renumbered 34 in Sept '76) an ex- Southern Railway car.
The concessions people used it for storage.
Just a bit of trivia.

Fun to see photos of the '49 only weeks before she changed my life. (And maybe a few hundred others!)

Thanks for the excellent comment Boiling Man. I had a lot of fun with Roy in the Cab at night keeping her hot. He had some great stories to tell! It was cold for SF but it was nice and toasty in the cab!

Thanks, but unfortunately my schedule did not allow me to stop in.
