ATSF 2926 Work Update - Flue installation begins!
Author: Cumbresfan

Week Ending 01/17/2015
Fifty tubes were cut and placed in the boiler last week and are awaiting expansion which will be performed by their contract boiler service company. All brake shoes (driver and trailing truck shoes) have arrived and are awaiting installation. Electrical conduits for cab wiring are being laid out prior to final installation.

New photos and videos show beginning flue installation and installation of copper seals in the staybolt sleeves.

4. Final sweeping of boiler and smokebox prior to beginning tube and flue installation.
5. First tubes inserted!
6. Completion of small tube placement (except for few on bottom); a couple of larger flues were placed.

Must be nice to be able to stand up in the boiler, those of us who've worked the
other way are envious.

Once the boiler fills up to the point where there's no room for people, how do you then position the flues correctly?

There should always be some room at the top, for a small person, who can then exit out through the steam dome.

I guess you could poke a long piece of rebar through, and run the flue tube in over that from hole to hole.

I was wondering that also...

Find an expendable member and leave him in there.

Copper ferrules on the firebox end? I would also be painting everything on the inside with Apexior.

Oompa-Loompas , but there are only a few that have this skill set so it does cost quite a bit to do the last few.

Ferrule the smokebox end, weld the firebox end and yes, there are several decent interior coatings
for the boiler shell.

Don't you just feed them in from the bottom up, then crawl out the top?

When we first rebuilt SP786 in central Texas, I helped coat the inside of the boiler with this really nasty black stuff. It was kind of like cold roofing tar and was very hard and time consuming to apply. The contractor said that once we start we needed to get finished the same day.
One of the nasty things about this stuff is that it was a very dangerous neurotoxin. So, we had to wear protective clothing as well as a full head respiratory system with air supplied by a compressor which was located far away from the work.

Two of us started at 9:00 AM and I left to go back to south Austin at 6:00 PM and we had only done about 1/4 of the boiler. The contractors crew completed the work and finished up in the early morning hours on Sunday.

I guess the contractor used us volunteers because we were expendable, grin.

It was a lot of hard work and fun helping to restore SP786 the first time.

So what is the possibility of 2926 and 3751 double-heading some day?

Edit: Typo, meant to write 3751.

Slim to none. 3752 was scrapped decades ago.

2926 open house is held in late September each year, it would be a crowd pleaser to see it steamed up for the event.
