Back to the Past-----SP steam FA trip with 1744
Author: Barstool

On May 8th, 1958, SP ran a fan trip to Sacramento using train 224 and GS-6 4460...At Sacramento, 2-6-0 took over for the run back to Davis and up the West Valley line to Woodland where the fan trip took the Knights landing branch...When the train reached Knights landing, the 1744 was turned at Josephine for the return back. Photo number one is 1744 in the trees taking it easy.....Photo # two is 1744 unloading the fans for a run by at Robbins Creek Trestle....Photo # three is 1744 waiting for 4460 at Davis who is to the right and in the back ground and moving up toward 1744......

That first photo is priceless. It's the kind of thing that we would go to a lot of trouble to re-create now (Hey lets do a setup that looks like an old fan trip!) cars, people, dog and everything. It almost looked staged, it's fantastic. So much character in the things that were then mundane and now period correct.

That 1st photo is amazing. It looks like a Norman Rockwell painting in real life!

I definitely agree !! Even though I like the coverage of that SP 1744 trip on our "SP Fantrips" video, I think that first photo is absolutely GREAT !! Yeah, with the dog too.

You have to wonder if 1744 will ever steam again. It's boiler sits at the Texas State Railroad in Rusk Tx and the running gear and tender in Alamosa, Co.

This may turn out to be the best steam shot this year. Back in 1988 I watched the 1744 on the Heber Creeper under beautiful Kodakrome skies. What a day!

I'll join all the kudos for that first photo. What a beautiful scene, such great composition and it tells a story. The other two are not too shabby either, and thanks for sharing them.

The picture most probably is at Knight's Landing, like just before the line turns North
and crosses the bridge. Excellent shot, shame that the 1744 isn't in one piece, there's a
spot beyond the old sugar plant location where you could almost reenact the shot.

All of the palm trees in the shot at Davis are all still in place but much larger.

The dog looks like it's snarling at the locomotive!

4460 is all in one piece, but it's not likely to be going anywhere for a long time, if ever.
