N&W Y5 2107
Author: kurt765

A long time ago I acquired a few original slides and negatives off of ebay. Unfortunately, all information about photographer, location, or anything else was lost. I'll post a couple pics. If anyone has any idea on this first one let me know. It was a 6x9 format black and white medium format negative showing N&W Y5 #2107 somewhere under steam. Is she leaking steam up front? Anyway, here's the first pic. I always find those huge low pressure cylinders interesting on the N&W Y's.

By all means, post more ! The detail is great.
And, agree, watching those Y's come at you
with those cylinders was always impressive,
especially on a curve.

I think it is Clare Yard in Mariemont, OH on the Cincinnati to Portsmouth line. These locos were used around Cincinnati on drag freights between Berry Yard near St. Bernard and Clare over a steep grade. In addition they did transfers from other yards to downtown Cincinnati over trackage rights from a junction with the Pennsylvania Railroads former Cincinnati Lebanon and Northern route to Lebanon, OH to Cincinnati part of a narrow gauge network of the 1870'and a legacy from those days. This was a steep 3% grade down the approach to Cincinnati and a tunnel at the top of the grade that is alongside I-71. This line is now abandoned and parts of the grade are visible in the winter along the route. This also hosted Z-1 class compounds on transfers to the L&N trackage on the Ohio River Riverfront. Cincinnati's Horseshoe Casino is built on the former PRR and N&W yards near Gilbert Ave. Tracks once ran down the middle of the street to the river at this point.

Massive engines. If my dad took me as a kid to go train watching and I saw that thing coming, I'd be very nervous--those cylinders could hit you!

Thanks for the info! I like to imagine what it would be like to see Y under steam again. If I were to win the powerball, you'd hear of me trying to get 2156 fired up :)

Here's a photo of an articulating 2156 taken about 1974. My son is standing on the front end, he's 43 now. I visited the museum last year, and found 2156 sitting in the shed.

I just learned today that the N&W had 81 of those monster Y-6s.
