A Casual Gathering At The Shops During The Boiler Work!
Author: LoggerHogger

The laid back nature of backwoods railroading is beautifully captured in this fine photo by Richard F. Thomas.

We are at the Diamond & Caldor enginehouse at Diamond Springs, California in the late 1940's while the railroads engine crews and shop personnel take a break while re-tubing one of the narrow gauge Shays. The smoke box door and the steam dome cover are off the Shay that is receiving new tubes and other repairs to her Lima built boiler.

The adjacent track to the right is vacant as 2-truck Shay #4 is out in the yards switching the mill yard. Shay #8 on the left has her stack capped as she has already completed her run to the woods for the day and she will wait until early tomorrow morning before repeating the process of delivering empties to the landing and returning to the mill with her cars loaded with huge pine logs.

For now, the only talk to be had is about the fishing possibilities for the next day that this crew has off work. Once the break is over, they will get back to the Shay and her boiler.

Actually the link & pin couplers were the downfall of the Diamond & Caldor. They had bee outlawed decades earlier by the State of California.

Even though the DI&C was only about 50 miles from the California State capital, no inspectorn noticed the link & pin couplers until the early 1950's. This shut them down for all time since they were low on timber and the cost to convert was too much money to justify it.
