Where 3 Mainline Roads Shared One Engine Facility!
Author: LoggerHogger

Unique among the small towns in the West is the engine facility that once existed at the town Of Hoquium, Washington. It was here that the 3 mainline railroads of the Pacific Northwest came together and used a single engine service facility.

The close quarters that were shared by these 3 railroads is amply demonstrated by this photo taken by Al Farrow in March 1938. Standing at the ready for their next days service were Union Pacific #3215, Northern Pacific #1675 and Milwaukee #7201. Each of these engines have found their way down the respective branch lines of their parent road to the town of Hoquium where they all came together at this one engine facility.

This scene must have been pretty uinque even at the time Al took it for it was published in the March 1938 issue of Railroad Magazine!

A book might be a really good idea. One with maps to go along with the photos. Hoquium might be a place known to all in the NW, but not for the rest of us. Tying the photos to the geography would add to the interest.

Hope you are thinking about it...

So clear and sharp, and what a collection of power. That is one great photo, Martin. Al Farrow did some fine work.

Didn't Hoquiam have a nice brick or cut stone "Union Station" also?

Whar might be that valve handle used for next to the 3216's headlight?

Looks like it might be for a water column or oil crane for the tank in the background.
