AT&SF #2926 at RailGiants in Pomona
Author: RailGiants

The New Mexico Steam Locomotive and Railroad Historical Society isn't able to bring their AT&SF No. 2926 4-8-4 steam locomotive from Albuquerque out to Pomona this month.

However, those attending our Annual Meeting will hear and see all the history, the restoration, and the most recent news about No. 2926 on Saturday, March 21, 2015, at the Los Angeles County Fairgrounds in Pomona, California.

NMSL&RHS's Director will be the guest speaker at our meeting. Lunch, beverages, and desert will be provided followed by a reception at our trains inside RailGiants Train Museum.

Please correct it again, as it should be 4-8-4, i.e. no x's in it.

Absolutely, the x's are a part of math equations, not steam engine wheel arrangements.

Hi Steve - thanks for sharing the info - and don't let the "Proof-readers" get you down.

Yes, it makes one wonder why people even bother to post with all the peanut gallery trolls here. Once is enough, but a whole battery of cry-babies have to come on board and ruin it.

Well EXCUSE me all to hell but, wouldn't you figure that anyone directly involved with that famous museum in Pomona would know what the hell a 4-8-4 is?????

And NOT a 4+8+4 either, since it is not an articulated.

Yah, that particular configuration occurs only in O-27.

Writing for the audience here is a challenge. Somewhere between the New York Times and San Francisco Examiner (wherein William Randolph Hearst targeted his attacks at the local railroad Southern Pacific) level of journalism.

4-8-4 is not intended as a mathematical expression. Hard to imagine how a stream locomotive could operate with eight wheels less than zero. 4-8-4= -8

Other format options for these numbers (with absurd examples of extreme literal interpretations):

Four Eight Four
4.8.4 (a heritage IP address?)
(484) (telephone area code near Philadelphia)
HU4 (a vintage telephone prefix in Los Angeles for HUbbard-4, which was changed to 484 during the 1960s)

The typical visitor at RailGiants doesn't absorb all the fine precision details of railroading. Many believe our 1920s era steam locomotives use the same diesel fuel as modern locomotives, and the primary difference is today's locomotives are colorful, but vintage locomotives were all black. "Oh; I never knew trains once needed steam."

I lost count years ago of how many parents while inside one of our oil-fueled steam locomotive cabs, look inside the firebox opening, and tell their small children, "look - that's where they shovel the coal," or "that's where they burn the wood." Many visitors won't remember what we told them about how these vintage locomotives operated. They care mostly about how their young children enjoyed sitting in the engineer's seat, blowing the whistle, ringing the bell, and that they captured the image on their smart phones.

There are others who greatly appreciate the new knowledge learned while here. A small portion of our constituency knows or cares about the fine details of locomotives.

Foreword:
My reply is not intended to be antagonistic, negative, combative, or anything of the sort, I'm trying to engage in a discussion about what has been stated by RailGiants. (Edit: I also feel that the ridiculous conversation takes away from AT&SF 2926 and the team that is doing the restoration!)

I think that comment is unfair. How hard is it for the "Museum that houses some of the country’s most well preserved Locomotives" to get the proper terminology correct?

Perhaps lack of information about the piece being displayed, a description, its intended use and configuration is to blame? A trip to a Museum is usually intended to be an educational one and that information about the museum pieces would be on a display stand near by?

Again, lack of information or labeling could be to blame here, as I noted earlier, museums are intended to educate and preserve our history, is that not what the point of your institution is?

It sounds like your institution is having a problem identifying with the intended audience..

That is a shame, look to VMT and other institutions for how to better engage your intended audience.

Thanks for that, dbesade,,,,,I fully agree. Plus the original poster did post here on the "Steam Railroading" Forum, where we do indeed know the difference, i.e. we are NOT the apparent "uneducated members of the public".
