Just the facts, PLEASE!!
Author: CZ10

Perhaps I'm committing heresy here, but can somebody PLEASE give
a factual account of the current status of the UP locomotives (I.E. - what
their current state is, the work to be done, etc.).  I am NOT interested in
more rehashing of the problems with the UP steam program and whatever
problems are (or are not) being created by various managers.

Thank you in advance.

Welcome, Welcome here my friends, to the show that never ends...

OK, how about this?

1) None of the three steam locomotives are operational.

2) The last time any UP steam locomotive was fired up and operated was July of 2013 (UP 844).

3) There is no longer anyone experienced nor knowledgable employed at the UP Steam Shop, thus nothing is getting worked on.

Any further questions?

None of them are operational or will be in the near future. The problem with giving you a list of what work needs to be done is that it varies depending on who is providing the list.

With no one around to work on them their status is a bit of a moot point.

Ha!

However, for those in the TO audience who have yet to join the ranks of the geriatric set:

And on top of that every other steam program has a great crew and it shows when the engines perform great with people who know what they're doing and not having an ego problem!

Every other being NS, not BNSF nor CSX.  If UP
officially announced the end of it's program, would
they then be on par with NS, BNSF, CSX, CN and
CP?

Granted, to lose what they had going is a travesty
and to imply anything short of 100% is AOK would
be an injustice to the program.

I thought I heard work is progressing on #844?

Here's a source (I suppose?) for the facts as told
by the UP steam department:

We have some very informative and detailed information
for you, brought from the public presentation given yesterday
at the Denver Train show! It will most likely answer all of your
questions and ideas regarding the engine conditions
(including 3985), what is going on with the 844, what are the
plans for the big boy (for example will it ever pull a freight a
train), and WHY did a shop rebuild have to happen? All of that
and much more coming up in the next few days. Clear,
transparent, answers we think you will enjoy.

It's nice to see UP making such an effort, assuming it's not
simply a measure to counter the negative aspects of what
is being said.

Not a single one of the E9s are operable, nor is the DDA40X.

Matter of fact, not even the shop switcher runs anymore.

The locomotives with special paint jobs are NOT part of the Cheyenne Shop fleet, therefore they ARE all operating.

Enough facts for you?

Mitch,

You have also been sucked in by the "official UP FaceBook" page, all of which is just another platform for the current manager to spew his lies about how the previous crew destroyed everything.

That is not a UP site. It's a couple of kids posting Dickens' crap as he feeds it to them.

Yup. Time for a new thread to liven up the show. The last one was new exactly one week ago and has rolled to the bottom and off the first TO Steam Railroading page. With 85 replies and nearly 8,000 views it was getting a bit tired. Whew!

Usually threads on this subject that start out as a plea for "facts" are by people who know but refuse to believe believe, or are trying to protect dl.

This is why I think every steam engine belongs in a park.  One question. ONE DAMN QUESTION. What is the status/condition of the steam engines. Not who screwed them up, who do you hate, whos has the biggest ego ( that one alone has many contestants) or what peoples personal feelings are or why UP doesnt have a operating steam engine. I am no expert but I will try to sum up what ive read. no bias, no emotion.

844 is sitting with all its flues removed and what I gather its rods removed. Fact: no flues no operate. The rods, some think they are fine but the shop guy thinks it need new ones. Sorry but i dont know the FRA inspection status.

3985 is sitting for what ever reason, if i remember right, its fire box fuel mainfold removed and no longer usable and in need of FRA inspection.

4014, not really sure of its status. It needed some asbestos removal and a long rebuild process.

And as a added bonus, E9A 951 and E9B 963B and in service in Cheyenne. E9A 949 is still in Kansas City bad ordered with flat spotted wheels.

This is only from memory, and there are those that know the brass nut physical condition. Feel free to correct me or add to it but leave the causes and poitics out of it. Well all have heard it many times.

6936 was in North Platte for work about six months ago, bad ordered because Jack worked for EMD
many years ago.
