This coming Sat. and Sunday, will be the last run for the 2472 in Niles Canyon  on the PLA  club lines unless there is a change of mind on the Part of the GMM..

Here are two shots taken of the 2472 on a fan trip about 1993...the first shot  is at Pinole along the Bluffs next to San Pablo Bay.....the second shot is taken at Avon on the Mococo line (Martinez-Tracy)

Why the last run?  What is the deal?

If the PLA is that dead set against GGRM why is PLA
allowing This weekend trips on 3-28 and 29 to begin with????
It is the legal right of PLA do do whatever the hell they want anyways.

The GGRM website FRONT page shows a 5-23-15 so allow that as well.
That 5-23-15 trip is Memorial Day weekend.
GGRM could fulfill their website and
have Memorial Day as the very LAST and Final 2472 trip on NCRY--PLA rails.
This whole issue of 2472 LAST trip is very very confusing on MANY levels.

Your photos were taken in 1993 on the weekend
when we ran and excursion to the Tracy Dry Bean
Festival.  We called it the "Bean Steam" train.  It
was 107 F when we got to Tracy on Saturday, July 31,
and 103 F when we got to Tracy on Sunday, August 1!
Whew!!

I was a Car Host on the Saturday trip, but never made
it to the festival, as I had planned -- it was just too
doggone hot.  Instead, I flaked out in the coolest car
I could find -- and later found that I had missed some
great reminiscences by one of our steam-era  guys, who
had been a carman at Bayshore Shops.  He was in the
baggage car, which was just too hot for me.  The guy
passed away some years ago.  He was a genius carman,
and a great guy, and is missed still.

Where will she go?

Last I heard from one of the GGRM board members is that they are headed to Tracy. The city of Tracy wants a RR museum in town and the GGRM wants to be the one that fits the bill.

Not that this IS what is happening but a quick google search for "Tracy railroad museum" comes up with this and there is a section "items for consideration" halfway down the page that could possibly be what the thought process is.  http://www.tracyrail.org/

Now that is one optimistic web site! You could run back and forth on the Holly Spur and pretty much never
bother anyone.

This weekend's runs of the 2472 will not be the last in Niles Canyon.  There are still at least a few more weekends this year where the 2472 will run.

I have been up to my eyeballs in alligators as of late, as trying to relocate a railroad museum and a messy divorce are both consuming my time and bandwidth. Plus I'm kind of busy at work, which doesn't help.

I will, in the near-future, write a more in-depth response as to what is going on with the GGRM. 

But, for now, understand that the main reason for our departure is making sure the 2472 has an indoor facility to both protect it and preserve it.  There is no available room in the canyon to build a suitable facility.  We acknowledge the support of the PLA over the past several years.  They came forward to help us out in a bind after we were forced out of Hunters Point.  We did the same thing when their 2467 was homeless and land-locked many years ago. 

There are options on the table as to where we will move.  When we decide on a location, our membership will hear the decision immediately. 

One thing that is certain; the GGRM will do everything in its power to preserve mainline steam for future generations.  It is our mission statement, it is our commitment.

I will write a more in-depth assessment when time allows.

Wow. That is a pretty impressive plan for the City of Tracy. I especially like the idea of using and restoring the Altamont Line as an original segment of the Transcontinental Railroad. Garrett, I wish you and GGRM lots of success and resources in the next 12 months. Tracy looks like it could be a great home for you and 2472.

The plan that Tracy proposes sounds great, but where is the money going to come from to pay for all this, we are talking Millions of Dollars.... and we are talking years to develop...In the mean time, will 2472 stay at the PLA?? plus all their equipment....And will the City of Tracy scale down their plans when they see was the dollar figures are going to be.  No body wants to see the 2472 end up in a static display.,,

Considering how the folks in Omaha have no interest in moving non-company owned equipment, Tracy might as well be the moon.

That's OK, the board member I talked to said they got a huge donation from a wealthy donor and are flooded with cash. So have the funds on hand to facilitate a move.

If the UP won't take money for simple PV moves, they won't take it for a museum hospital train move either. Right now, as a corporation they just are not interested.
