Interesting. I always thought that the "little engine" was on the front of a doubleheader consist.

HotWater, not to challenge your deep knowlege, but I thought it was usually conventional to have the "road" engine coupled to the train and the "helper" in front?  In this case, wasn't this trip run on the NYS&W?  Without looking, I think Tully, NY is on the NYS&W.  In which case the 142 may have been considered the "road" engine?  I may be all wet here....

OK, but did this trip start out as a doubleheader? Was the 261 "added" as a helper for some steep grade enroute?

If I remember correctly, 261 ran a 2-day Scranton-Syracuse (and return) trip that summer.  261 pulled her train solo from Scranton to Binghamton, and met 142 somewhere just north of Binghamton.  They combined the 2 trains and proceeded to Syracuse with 261 on the point.

HotWater....I always heard that the high drivered loco road in the rear......for a conventional doubleheader, not as a temporary helper.

So you're saying the #142 has larger diameter drivers than #261?

IIRC, in 1998 142 led C&O 614 between Hoboken, NJ and Port Jervis, NY on a High Iron trip.

Not entirely true.  142 led for PART of the trip.

HotWater...no, I'm saying that with a traditional doubleheader, say, a Pacific would be in the rear, and a Mikado as the lead of a doubleheader. High drivered engine in the rear. This is what I've heard as a makeup of a normal doubleheaded train.
