E.K. Muller: SP 2472, freight hog 1956
Author: Evan_Werkema

The end of regular SP steam operations was rapidly approaching, and a certain high stepping passenger engine was trying her best to look at home as she dragged a mixed freight through Newark, CA in September 1956.  E.K. Muller was trackside to capture the scene, and his photo is now in the Western Railway Museum Archives.

Thanks, Evan, for posting this great photo of
"the old girl"!  She sure had been downgraded
from her glory days in the 1920s as premier power
for the Sparks, Nevada-Ogden,, Utah part of the
famed luxury train, the  "Overland Limited".

(Thanx also for visiting Rio Vista Junction and
finding all those great photos! N  Please keep
'em coming!)

Hi,

That Rheem Manufacturing plant has a bit of railroad history too: It was once the Graham Foundry;
they cast metal parts for the Carter Brothers wood railroad car building firm. The Carter Bros. plant
site was across the street to the left of the photo, next to the site of the SP depot. The Rheem site
is now a condo development.

The 2472's days as a passenger hauler weren't over quite yet.  October of 1956 found her straying into Muller's viewfinder yet again, this time on train 147 inbound to San Francisco at Potrero Tower as assorted 4-8-4's look on from the Mission Bay roundhouse.

Evan --- VERY VERY nice!!   Looks from the
photo that Train #147 was a mail train -- from
the 4 baggage cars behind her tender, and just
one gallery car -- nicely painted in two-tone grey.

Ahhhh.....in some ways, those were the days.....

A Gallery car makes one heck of a "rider coach".

So the gallery cars and steam briefly co-existed.

Train #147 was a mail train (primarily) well into the 60's.  I watched them almost daily drop/pick-up a mail car in Redwood City.

Being as #141 was a part of the commute operations, I'd prefer, my opinion only of course, your mileage may vary,  to call it a commuter train which carries mail.  I'm wondering if 147 carried the peninsula and SF business from SP #91, the Coast Mail?  AA
