Steam & Excursion > Easter Bunny + 113Date: 03/29/15 10:15 Easter Bunny + 113 Author: m1bprr Yesterdays run of the JCL 6S46 #113 was actually to accommodate the Easter Bunny and kids, All this is made possible by the Reading & Northern RR who supplied the GP-39n plus the passenger equipment on their Minersville branch.

Bob Jordan Date: 03/29/15 10:59 Re: Easter Bunny + 113 Author: wcamp1472 After all the discussion last year about the benefits of the insulated and jacketed boiler barrel and firebox exteriors, obviously the decision to continue to run WITHOUT the benefits of jacket/insulation is conscious choice.
So, pulling the few cars, with the diesel doing the work, not only deprives the steamer of a way to pull a draft; but, whatever beneficial heat from the fire, the heat of the water is radiated out to the ambient temperature and we continue to be oblivious to the Laws of Thermodynamics. The exterior radiating and convecting surface of the boiler exceeds the heating sq. footage of the firebox ------ so, what's SO hard to grasp, about that? DUHH! Remember, even with a perfectly jacketed boiler, about 95% of the heat of the BEST locos, goes up the stack as waste heat. Soft coal or hard coal, or a mix, ain't gonna make the difference for poor ol' 113. However, the whistle can get off a wheeze, or too (toot?). Wes C. PS.. Of the three methods of heat transfer, the most effective is 'conduction' ..... So, in a summer downpour the cold rain will drip off the barrel ( in a heated state), and some will be turned into voluminous water vapor clouds, thanks the the efforts of the fire- person.... Date: 03/29/15 18:37 Re: Easter Bunny + 113 Author: Keystone1 Wes...as I understand it (rumor department), the owner of 113 doesn't want to put insulation and jacket on the locomotive until he gets an enginehouse to keep the water off the boiler and seeping into the insulation.

I for one am glad she's running and look forward to seeing her someday.

Given what a small bunch of folks working out doors have accomplished be thank full that the 113 indeed operates!!! Ed K. Date: 04/01/15 18:47 Re: Easter Bunny + 113 Author: RBMN-ENGR Great shots Ed. Thanks for sharing them.

We have this one, and the Atlantic Camelback in Baltimore...and that's IT for the Central Railroad of New Jersey. The Erie came out even worse with ZERO saved!!!
