Steam locomotive main driver on new $10 US coin
Author: LTCerny

The $10 gold coin to honor first Lady Bess Truman, to be issued this year, has a very detailed view of a steam locomotive main driver, even down to the brake shoe, on the back of the coin.  Apparently this is to represent the whistle-stop campaign trips she made with her husband. The US Mint website has details.

How much gold is in a US $10 gold coin piece?

This would make a great "Whose am I?" Where's Mitch Goldman?

But I wonder, in 1948, how much of Truman's trip was actually powered by steam.

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say that's a Baldwin disk center on the coin.  Just a guess.

My brother Mike and I saw it here in Mojave as schoolkids - the train was on the SP and probably had steam engines but (uncharacteristically!) I wasn't paying attention when it rolled in.
"The President Travels by Train" by Bob Withers shows at least one steam engine and mentions another used as a helper during Truman's campaign tours...

: )

Lol.  I like it!  Might have to acquire one and they would seemingly make
great gifts.

Here is a link with some more info:

United States Mint unveils approved designs for 2015-W First Spouse gold $10 coins
http://www.coinworld.com/news/united-states-mint-unveils-2015-first-spouse-gold-coin-designs.html

Looks like they will be available on April 16th, 2015.  No price listed - does that mean they actually will
be $10 each??

The US mint is listing them for $770.00.  You might want to get several, for each of your close friends and family.

Take a look at http://www.coinnews.net/2014/10/10/2015-first-spouse-gold-coins-designs/ .  Evidently there were six entries for the Bess Truman reverse, and three of them were train-related.

The winning design with the wheel is credited to Joel Iskowitz: http://www.usmint.gov/education/artisticinfusion/?action=designer&designer=11

The above links showed different coins, though from the same
series.  Thanks - maybe I'll hold off for now, lol.

Odd note shown within the text for the coins at the Mint:

" A minimum of four one-half ounce, $10 24-karat gold coins
will be minted and released annually in the order the spouses
served in the position."

Maybe they'll be worth a bit more if I buy all four, lol.
