Most handsome ten-wheeler ever? St. L.S-W #667
Author: WrongWayMurphy

A lot of steam fans get all jacked up by the big engines, the bigger the better,
but I am in the minority in that the ten-wheeler is my favorite type, with the
Cotton Belt's Class GO passenger engines being my favorite of this type.

These engines were originally built as coal burners in the teens, then reconditioned
to burn oil in the mid twenties.

Further narrowing down the greatness, only 5 St.L.S-W ten-wheelers had disc drivers and only
three, including #667 shown here, were rebuilt with the Scullin drivers.  With the
smokebox center mounted headlight and cast Cotton Belt emblem on the cylinder
chest, I present #667 as the perfect steam engine.

Preach on, Bro. Murphy.  The G0 class were some of the best looking locos on the Cotton Belt.

That's one stout looking engine!  An Elesco Feedwater Heater mounted in the same manner as seen on the T&P's magnificent M1, ALCO-built 4-8-2's, would be a nice addition.  I know that tomstp would agree with me.  Right Tom?

I'm sure that thing was a speed beast, and it looks stout.  But those wheels make it look cartoonish.

Still, very interesting!

LOL. I was thinking the same.....now if they had only painted them red.

Really, scullen disc drivers on a ten-wheeler! The only thing missing is a Dreyfus inspired shroud over the boiler.

Ummm, can't get over the drivers, I'd be more toward a T-28 or T-31, still that is a
pretty efficient looking beast.

Out

Driver dia 69", not sure average speed but not blazing as the St.L.S-W did
not try to compete with MKT or MOP/T&P  for overnight St. Louis - Dallas
customers knowing that the route was not competitive for the time sensitive traveler.

That's a good photo of an interesting locomotive.  However, my vote for the most appealing of this class is for the Central Railroad of New Jersey 4-6-0s.

I believe photographer Don Wood was involved in an effort to save one of these

"Most handsome" ten-wheeler? I dunno about that, but it's undoubtedly one of the most tricked-out! Second only to the Milwaukee's North Woods Hi 4-6-0's, I'd say.

I've always been a big fan of the Rutland F2 and NYC F12's and the PRR G5's.
