If Looks Could Kill - This Photographer Gets The Evil Eye!
Author: LoggerHogger

We all have had the experience of photographing a train crew at work only to receive their disapproving glares while they try to figure out what we are up to with our cameras trained on them.

Such was the case in the 1930's at Ft. Bragg, California for this photographer who caught the crew of California-Western #17 at the water tank servicing the engine.   Clearly the crewman at the tank spout is nor fond of having his picture taken without warning and he is expressing his displeasure with his piercing glare at the camera man.

I for one am glad the photographer stood his ground, as I love this image.

The photographer was probably wearing a "I like Shays" T-shirt!

He looks so distracted by the photographer that he doesn't notice the tank is overflowing.

What a cool shot.  Neat engine on a long surviving shortline most of us more associate with excursions than being a working pike.

And I'm intrigued by what looks like a stock car in the background.

I don't see a one finger salute…..so I don't think he was too upset.

Or he could just be a working man doing his job... Some folks read way too much into everything.

What is the meaning of "4415x22-72" under the cab side number?

I'm guessing:

44 is the driver diameter
15x22 the cylinder bore and stroke
72 is ?  The locomotive weight in tons?

Scott,

You are correct on all but the "72".  The engine weight was 49 tons.  I have wondered what the 72 refers to as well.

Maybe 72,000 lbs. on the drivers?
